Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders - Key Info
Which birds do Solar Panel Excluders work for?
- Pigeons
- Seagulls
- Crows
- Rooks
Birds love a spot that is high up so they can view the area for potential predators and feeding areas. A rooftop that has solar panels installed also has the perfect nesting point for them. The birds will nest beneath the panel, which means a build-up of nesting material underneath. The droppings on top of the panel where they perch during the day can affect the energy-generating performance of the solar panel. Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders are an all-plastic UV stabilised proofing system that can be siliconed around the sides of the panel, creating a barrier which pigeons and other birds cannot penetrate.
What can I do to stop birds nesting under solar panels?
Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders are the easiest way to stop pigeons and birds from nesting under all styles of solar panels that have a gap underneath of between 80 – 150 mm. Each strip is 333 mm long but can be snapped or cut into 35 mm pieces along special grooves. The nine vertical prongs can also be snapped or cut to different heights to fit any gap and are ideal for undulating roofing tiles. Every strip has 125 silicone locking holes; this allows any depth solar panel to be bird proofed, from the slimmer modern panels to the wider depth older style.
Why do birds nest under solar panels?
Pigeons, seagulls, rooks and crows nest throughout the year. The recommended gap between the roof and the solar panel often unwittingly provides the perfect space for a cosy, safe nest away from the weather and predators. Seagulls are repeat offenders returning to the same place to nest year on year. Over time the build-up of nesting material can be quite extensive and, coupled with the harmful acidity of bird droppings, can cause irreparable damage to the solar panels, both on top where they can congregate during the day and to the cables below.
Humane Solar Panel Spikes
The Defender® Solar Panel Bird Spike Excluder is the newest product in the humane range of Defender® bird control solutions. It causes no harm to the birds but acts as a barrier and prevents pigeons and similar-sized birds from being able to nest or roost under the solar panels. If they are excluded from beneath the solar panels, they will often abandon the roof altogether.
