Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders

Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders are an all-plastic UV Stabilised Polycarbonate proofing system that can be siliconed around the sides of the panel, creating a barrier around the edge that pigeons, seagulls, rooks and crows cannot penetrate. They will fit all solar panels that have a gap underneath of between 80 – 150 mm, with the prongs hovering just above the roof tiles. Birds excluded from nesting under solar panels often abandon the building altogether.

Long Life Expectancy

The Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders are made from super-tough Durolon UV Stabilised Polycarbonate. This ensures that once installed on your solar panel they do not yellow or become brittle and can withstand low and high temperatures. This solar panel bird spike product comes with a 15-Year Warranty when installed in the UK.

Silicone Fixing Holes

Along the main body of the spike are 125 cross-shaped glue-fixing holes. When the solar panel bird excluder is pressed onto the edge of the panel, the silicone oozes through the holes forming cross-shaped rivets that lock the spike firmly in place.

Snappable Sections and Adjustable Prongs

The Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders can be shortened to smaller lengths and heights to accommodate the panel length and gap height. Integral grooves along the strip have 8 vertical snapping points to reduce the length to finish the run. Each prong also has three horizontal grooves that can be shortened to accommodate undulating roof tiles.

Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders - Key Info

Which birds do Solar Panel Excluders work for?

  • Pigeons
  • Seagulls
  • Crows
  • Rooks

Birds love a spot that is high up so they can view the area for potential predators and feeding areas. A rooftop that has solar panels installed also has the perfect nesting point for them. The birds will nest beneath the panel, which means a build-up of nesting material underneath. The droppings on top of the panel where they perch during the day can affect the energy-generating performance of the solar panel. Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders are an all-plastic UV stabilised proofing system that can be siliconed around the sides of the panel, creating a barrier which pigeons and other birds cannot penetrate.

What can I do to stop birds nesting under solar panels?

Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders are the easiest way to stop pigeons and birds from nesting under all styles of solar panels that have a gap underneath of between 80 – 150 mm. Each strip is 333 mm long but can be snapped or cut into 35 mm pieces along special grooves. The nine vertical prongs can also be snapped or cut to different heights to fit any gap and are ideal for undulating roofing tiles. Every strip has 125 silicone locking holes; this allows any depth solar panel to be bird proofed, from the slimmer modern panels to the wider depth older style.

Why do birds nest under solar panels?

Pigeons, seagulls, rooks and crows nest throughout the year. The recommended gap between the roof and the solar panel often unwittingly provides the perfect space for a cosy, safe nest away from the weather and predators. Seagulls are repeat offenders returning to the same place to nest year on year. Over time the build-up of nesting material can be quite extensive and, coupled with the harmful acidity of bird droppings, can cause irreparable damage to the solar panels, both on top where they can congregate during the day and to the cables below.

Humane Solar Panel Spikes

The Defender® Solar Panel Bird Spike Excluder is the newest product in the humane range of Defender® bird control solutions. It causes no harm to the birds but acts as a barrier and prevents pigeons and similar-sized birds from being able to nest or roost under the solar panels. If they are excluded from beneath the solar panels, they will often abandon the roof altogether.

How to install Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluders

Solar panels make the perfect home for pigeons, seagulls, crows and rooks; they offer cover for their nests in a high up safe position on the roof. Installation of Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluder is a quick and easy way to stop birds from gaining access underneath the panels. Ensure you have purchased enough strips to cover all the open sides around the outside of the solar panels.

Step 1 - Clean the Area: Before starting the installation, you need to make sure that the space underneath the panels is free from live birds and chicks so that they are not trapped behind the Defender® Solar Panel Bird Excluder. If the nests are abandoned, clear away all the nesting material and debris.

If the panels are soiled on the side or have moss or lichen growing, they will need to be cleaned. Use warm soapy water to remove all debris. We also recommend using a disinfectant spray like Germ Clear™ Bird Droppings Disinfectant Spray especially if the sides and top have guano on them. Ideally, leave the area for 24 hours to ensure it is fully dry.

Step 2 – Adjusting the height: Offer up the Defender® Solar Panel Excluders to the side of the solar panel in the place where you are going to install it. The height of the prongs may need adjusting to accommodate undulating tiles or differing heights of roof tiles that step down. The prongs have grooves on the bottom half of the prongs, which can be cut off using snips or similar tool. The ends of the prongs should touch or hover just above the tiles at a distance of no more than 2.5 cm.

Step 3 - Fixing Methods: Defender® Solar Panel Spikes should be affixed with our specially designed and easy to use Defender® Pigeon Spike Fixing Silicone. This adhesive is formulated to create an extra strong bond with the polycarbonate of our solar panel excluders and the sides of the panels. It is important to check the suitability of surfaces for use with Defender® Silicone. For more information, please visit the product page Defender® Pigeon Spike Fixing Silicone. Always do a tester of one strip if you are unsure.

Step 4 - Silicone: You will need a caulking gun (not provided) to use the silicone included in the pack. Apply Defender® Pigeon Spike Fixing Silicone liberally across the back of the main body of the solar panel excluders. If you do not have a caulking gun, we have them available to purchase here and we also have a handy guide on How to use a Caulking gun if you haven't used one before.

Step 4 - Positioning: Once the adhesive has been applied, push the Defender® Solar Panel Excluders into position along the side of the solar panel. The strips can be snapped or cut into smaller lengths so that a side can be completely finished to the corners leaving no gaps where a bird might force their way under again.

Step 5 – Raised Sections: Birds, particularly seagulls, are possessive of their chosen nesting or roosting sites; if you want to rid them from the entire roof, you may need to consider proofing other areas like the ridge. The Defender® Ridge Spike is siliconed directly onto the triangular ridge tiles.
