The Defender® Wide Stainless Steel Bird Spikes can be installed by anyone quickly and easily, with no professional help required. There are several ways to install, but one of the quickest methods is to use Defender® Bird Spike Fixing Adhesive Glue. If preferred, the installer can also use nails, screws or cable ties.
Step 1 - Clean the Area: It is essential to thoroughly clean and dry the area before starting installation. Dampen down the area with a disinfectant spray like
Germ Clear™ Bird Droppings Disinfectant Spray and remove any loose droppings or debris. If a pigeon has already been using the area it may be heavily soiled with bird droppings. If this is the case please see our
"How to safely clean bird droppings guide" guide for more in-depth cleaning advice.
Step 2 - Fixing Methods: For wide anti-roosting spikes we would always recommend using Defender® Bird Spike Fixing Silicone to install the strips. It is the fastest and easiest way to adhere the strips onto most surfaces and gives a strong hold for many years. However, the spikes can also be installed using cable ties, screws or nails using the small holes already along the base.
Step 3 - Silicone: You will need a caulking gun (not provided) to use Defender® Fixing Silicone. Use the caulking gun to squeeze a bead of silicone about 8 mm wide along the base of the anti-roosting spike. On uneven or rough surfaces, you may need to use a little more silicone to ensure a secure hold. Always check the suitability of surfaces for use with Defender® Silicone. and we also have a handy guide on
"How to use a Caulking Gun Guide" if you haven't used one before.
Step 4 - Positioning: When you have decided where to install the wide anti-roosting pigeon spikes, push them down firmly into position, with the outer pins overhanging the leading edge slightly. Along the base of the Defender® Stainless Steel Wide Bird Spike, there are 11 cross-shaped holes. When using fixing silicone, the glue will ooze through the holes and form cross-shaped rivets that lock the steel bird spike firmly in place on the ledge. These holes can also be used for screws or nails too. The wide stainless steel bird spikes have a flexible base and can be secured onto curved surfaces.
Step 5 - Full Protection: Repeat the process until the area is fully protected. Every effort should be made to spike all possible landing sites 2.5 cm or greater. This wide stainless steel spike has 9 snap points where the user can break the strip into smaller sections with their fingers, allowing the pigeon spike to fit perfectly on any size ledge.
Step 6 – Cavities and Raised Sections: Pigeons can be very possessive of their chosen nesting or roosting sites. If there is a cavity, hole or raised section above the ledge being protected, every effort should be made to protect this too. If there is a hole behind the area, make sure this is blocked and no pigeons are trapped behind.
