Defender® Street Light Spike - Key Info
Which birds are deterred by the Street Light Spike?
Defender® Street Light Spike is a single strip ideal for use as a stand-alone bird deterrent. It has 10 integral extra-long wires, 5 on each side of the strip, each over half a metre long These wires move gently in the wind, making not only a visual deterrent for birds but also a physical deterrent as seagulls do not like anything touching their wings. There are also 20 central pins arranged in 4 fanned-out rows to stop the most determined gull from standing among the wires.
Where can I use the Defender® Street Light Spike?
This spike is the perfect solution for street lights, lamp posts and air conditioning units. The extra-long wires should be allowed to hang down at either side and move freely. Due to the size of a lamp post or street light, and the fact that the coverage of this spike is huge, generally only 1 strip is required.
How do Street Light Spikes work?
Although it looks aggressive, this spike is a humane seagull deterrent. The long spike wires work by visually deterring birds as well as physically repelling them so they can not get near the installation area to get a foot hold. In addition, the 20 central pins which stop any bird from trying to come in from above and standing in the centre of the spike.

How to install Defender® Street Light Spikes
Please be aware that some street lights have casing made from polyethylene or polypropylene and silicone will not stick to these surfaces. Always install a test piece for a minimum of 48 hours first to ensure a strong adhesion. Street Light spikes can also be installed using cable ties or screws.
Step 1 – Clean the top: It is essential to clean the top of the light before siliconing the Steet Light Spike into position. This will ensure the silicone will stick to the top rather than to the debris and guano left on the top. Damp down the area first, preferably using a disinfectant spray like
Germ Clear™ Bird Droppings Disinfectant Spray to ensure no dust is breathed in while brushing the debris off the top into a suitable container. Once clean allow to dry fully before starting installation.
Step 2 – Snap to size: For the top of a sign or lamp post, the spike strip can be snapped into smaller pieces to fit exactly. There are 4 grooves along the bottom, which can be simply snapped by hand.
Step 3 – Fixing methods: We always recommend using our Defender® fixing silicone when installing Defender® bird spikes, this silicone has been tried and tested to ensure a strong fix to the polycarbonate base of the spikes and to the surface.
However, if installing on a street lamp, test a piece first. Some street lights or lamp posts are made from polyethylene and polypropylene to which no silicones will adhere. In this case, cable tie or screw the spikes into position.
Step 4 – Silicone: A caulking gun is required to apply the
Defender® Bird Spike Fixing Silicone
to the base of the lamp spike. Squeeze liberally along the entire base, then push down onto the surface allowing the silicone to ooze through the silicone locking holes.
Step 5 – Positioning: On the top of a street light, position the spike centrally down the centre of the light, allowing the long wires to freely hang to either side.
It is always important to check the suitability of the surface for use with Defender® Silicone. For more information, please visit the product page
